NORAM Engineering and Constructors successfully commissioned a new demonstration plant facility located at the BC Research Inc Technology Centre in Richmond, BC to demonstrate at commercial scale the electrochemical conversion of lithium chloride to high purity lithium hydroxide using NORAM’s NORSCAND® A15 Electrolyser platform.
With the continued increase in adoption of electric vehicles there is growing demand for battery grade lithium hydroxide and the need to be able to sustainably source and refine raw lithium materials into battery grade chemicals. By use of electrolysis, raw lithium feed stock like lithium chloride or lithium sulphate can be upgraded into battery grade lithium hydroxide by use of electricity instead of chemicals which greatly reduces CO2 emissions, liquid effluents (sodium sulphate), and operating costs. NORAM’s demonstration of electrochemical refining of lithium hydroxide at industrial electrolyser scale is a critical step in deploying this sustainable solution at industrial sites worldwide. The lithium chloride electrolysis process demonstrated by NORAM is built upon experience gained through years of development and operation of lithium sulphate electrolysis systems.
