Natural Resources Canada Invests $4.5 Million with NESI for Industrialization of Electrochemical Production of Lithium Hydroxide

NORAM Electrolysis Systems Inc (NESI) is pleased to announce the investment of $4,500,000 from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) through the Critical Minerals Research Development and Demonstration Program. This significant investment from NRCan will support the continued industrialization of lithium hydroxide production by electrolysis. Along with other critical minerals, such as nickel, cobalt, and copper, lithium is required for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries which are a key component of the global transition to clean energy supply. The Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy identifies the need to invest and support the development of the entire critical minerals supply chain including in the mid-stream processing area which includes processing, refining, and recycling of lithium.

Natural Resources Canada’s investment will support the establishment of a state-of-the-art Lithium Electrolysis Test Centre in Richmond, British Columbia. This will allow production of tonnage quantities of battery grade lithium hydroxide, using NESI’s industrial scale NORSCAND® Electrolysis platform. This facility will allow resource developers, refiners, and recyclers product from commercial scale electrolysis operations using their unique feedstocks. As part of the operations there will be extensive brine treatment infrastructure. This facility will also include equipment to enable continued technology development to support NESI and Canada to maintain its’ position at the leading edge of sustainable electrochemical processing technologies.

“Across critical mineral value chains — from upstream exploration and extraction to downstream processing, manufacturing and recycling — the electric vehicle supply chain holds incredible economic opportunity for Canada and Canadians. New clean technologies will help address gaps in our world-leading supply chain; seize the economic opportunity presented to us; keep Canadian industry competitive in a rapidly evolving global context; and create jobs — now and for future generations.”

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources

“NESI is grateful for the support from Natural Resources Canada and their recognition of NESI’s commitment to developing and implementing sustainable electrochemical process technologies at industrial scales for the production and recycling of critical minerals like lithium to support the domestic and global lithium-ion battery markets. The support of Natural Resources Canada will accelerate industrial adoption of our NORSCAND® Electrolysis technology.”
