World’s First Industrial Demonstration Plant for Electrolytic Conversion of Lithium Sulphate to Battery Grade Lithium Hydroxide

NORAM’s industrial demonstration-scale electrolysis unit, supplied to Nemaska Lithium for upgrading lithium sulfate into battery-grade lithium hydroxide was first energized on site at Nemaska Lithium’s Shawinigan Phase One Plant February 7, 2017.

The demonstration plant is based around an industrial scale NORAM NORSCAND® lithium sulphate electrolyser which is designed for production rates as high as 800TPY Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate (LHM). NORAM supplied the Electrolyser, electrolysis cell house process design, basic engineering package for the electrolysis demonstration plant, the DC electrical systems, and supported the commissioning and operations of the facility. The Nemaska Phase 1 Plant represents the first fully integrated processing facility in North America from extraction of raw materials to production of battery grade lithium hydroxide using electrochemical processing technology. This facility will provide battery grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate to end users for product qualification and provide process, operations, and technology verification at commercial scales to support the engineering and design of the Phase 2 Plant for industrial scale production.
