NESI awarded $1 Million from BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy for Industrialization of electrochemical regeneration of sodium sulphate

NORAM Electrolysis Systems Inc. (NESI) has been selected for $947,500 in funding as part of the B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE)’s July 2024 Open Call for Innovation.

CICE’s funding will support NESI in validating technology for the industrial-scale electrochemical regeneration of sodium sulfate effluent from lithium-ion battery manufacturing, enabling sustainability in lithium battery manufacturing through circular processing.

“We’re on a mission to fast-track the commercialization of B.C.’s most promising climate solutions. A critical part of that is supporting innovators when they need it the most, so they ultimately deliver those impactful solutions to the world while creating economic benefits for B.C. and Canada,” Sarah Goodman, President and CEO of CICE.

NESI’s innovation eliminates liquid effluent, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and enables a circular economy for battery metal refining and recycling worldwide. Using electrochemical salt-splitting, NESI converts the liquid effluent waste from traditional lithium refining, manufacturing, and recycling processes into valuable chemicals with the NORSCAND® Electrolyser. This process ensures production with minimal environmental footprint.

“Sodium sulphate waste is a major challenge for existing and planned traditional processing of lithium hydroxide and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries. NESI is working on solving this problem directly via membrane electrolysis of lithium salts to produce battery grade lithium hydroxide which avoids the production of sodium sulphate. However, another pathway to eliminate sodium sulphate as a waste is to convert it back into valuable chemicals for re-use in the main process, this can be accomplished by using electrolysis. NESI is grateful for the support from BC CICE which will help NESI take this technology from our pilot plant to a commercial product and provide a near-term solution to ensure sustainability in the global lithium supply chain,” Jeremy Moulson, President and CEO of NESI.
