NORAM Electrolysis Systems (NESI) is proud to announce the successful energization of Vulcan Energy Resources Limited’s (Vulcan’s) 100%-owned Central Lithium Hydroxide Optimisation Plant (CLEOP) facility, utilizing NESI’s proprietary NORSCAND® Electrolysis Technology. This milestone represents the production of the first battery-grade lithium hydroxide products in Europe, all from a European lithium resource.
Vulcan’s CLEOP facility converts Lithium Chloride (LiCl) from the Company’s upstream Lithium Extraction Optimisation Plant (LEOP) to battery grade LHM. Central to Vulcan’s promise of Zero Carbon Lithium is the integration of NESI’s clean, low-carbon-footprint lithium processing technology. NESI’s technology replaces the carbon-intensive step of chemical addition with electrolysis, using electricity to force the necessary chemical reactions to produce battery-grade lithium; reactions normally achieved through the addition of tonnes of concentrated chemicals. The carbon footprint from the production and transport of chemicals is avoided, and less chemical addition at the input of the process results in less waste output.
President and CEO of NESI, Jeremy Moulson, stated: “NESI would like to congratulate Vulcan on this milestone achievement. The energization of Vulcan’s CLEOP facility, which represents the first ever production of battery grade lithium hydroxide in Europe from Europe is a significant milestone towards large scale sustainable domestic refining of lithium hydroxide for the European battery markets. NESI is proud to partner with Vulcan on the delivery of this ground-breaking project. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Vulcan.”
Cris Moreno, Managing Director and CEO of Vulcan Energy, stated: “Today marks a major milestone in our mission to establish a domestic supply chain, delivering green lithium for EV batteries to Europe. This world-class facility is already producing the first sustainable lithium hydroxide, a crucial step towards Europe’s resource independence and the transition to zero-emission mobility.”
“We were honoured to have our operational partners from NESI, represented by CEO Jeremy Moulson, with us, alongside the Canadian Ambassador, to celebrate this momentous day. Our collaboration with NESI has been a vital component of our successful operations, and we look forward to continuing this strong partnership.
NESI would like to acknowledge the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) for providing advisory services and R&D funding support towards achieving this milestone.
Vulcan is aiming to become Europe’s first producer of domestically produced lithium, and the world’s first producer of carbon neutral lithium hydroxide for electrical vehicle batteries. (Home – VULCAN ENERGY RESOURCES)
